Fun at work

Print design

I love designing fun projects that lift employee morale.

Tribune Media Services runs an internal campaign annually to raise money for United Way. One year the theme was “That ’70s United Way Campaign”

Each TMS employee is assigned one of twelve teams, each with a 70’s theme team name.

  • Kotter’s Class
  • Ponch Patrol
  • Speed Racers
  • Brady Bunchers
  • Patridge Family
  • Love Boaters
  • The Jeffersons
  • Charlie’s Angeles
  • Jackson 10
  • The Ropers
  • Mork’s Martians
  • Scooby’s Squad

Teams that reached 100% participation got a day off.

I did the illustrations for each team, along with the logo and all the designs for the collateral.

The closing event was a boat ride on Lake Michigan. The drawing for the Love Boaters came in handy.

First, I did the pencil sketches of each team. Then I traced the sketches in Illustrator.

Another year the theme was “The Sweet Taste of Success,” with the teams having a candy theme.

The teams were:

  • Lemonheads
  • Lifesavers
  • Lollipops
  • Gummi Bears
  • Smarties
  • Pez
  • Bottlecaps
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Junior Mints
  • Bottlecaps
  • Snowcaps
  • Pixy Stix

Dick Tracy Ping Pong Tournament

When our CEO said we were having a company ping pong tournament, I couldn’t resist having Dick Tracy be part of the logo. (Tribune Content Agency owns and syndicates Dick Tracy)

Before the tournament, each participant drew a Dick Tracy rogue from a hat. That rogue became the participant’s identity throughout the tournament.
