So many companies emailing about their privacy policy! Wow. Well, it’s a good thing that the European Union is forcing everyone to publish simple policies on how each company uses cookies and data. All consumers should know what is each company’s policy.
What happens when you sign up for an email list? Or when you use a contact form on a website, are they automatically adding you to some contact list? These privacy policies are supposed to explain all that.
In that spirit, I wrote up a privacy and cookie policy explaining how I use contact forms, email lists, Google Analytics, and such. Mine is very much not in legal speak, instead it’s written in my regular voice. When I don’t understand something, I’ll say that I don’t understand it. Like WordPress cookies. I’m guessing the WordPress CMS installs some sort of cookie. What it does, I don’t know!
If you have a personal website, you might want to consider adding a privacy policy page. Feel free to check out mine for ideas. I cover:
- Introduction
- Who I am
- The sites I blog on
- Contact forms
- Newsletter signup forms
- Google ads
- Google Analytics
- Embedded content (e.g. Youtube, Vimeo, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter)
- WordPress
- Affiliate links
- Updates
- Contact info
